A Dialogue on  “Religious and Cultural Diversity: A Case of Muslim students on the Hijab at school”

Image

Rationale

One high school in Bangkok does not allow Muslim students to wear the hijab to school. This  school rents the land from a Buddhist temple. Muslim students then claim the rights to wear it. At the same time, students need to follow the school’s regulation. This issue has the potential to create confusion, misunderstanding, and disharmony in Thai society.

In order to tackle this issue, it is important that we understand and respect cultural diversity. In doing so, we create an opportunity to learn from and appreciate the many different individual identities – each with her or his own principles and practices -in Thai society.  By showing consideration for different cultural principles and practices we have an opportunity to overcome the difficulties associated with a multi-cultural society and enhance mutual understanding.

Mahidol University’s Research Center for Peace Building, Research Institute for Languages and Cultures of Asia, Department of Humanities, Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities, College of Religious Studies, and Center for Human Rights and Social Development cooperated to conduct a Dialogue on Religious and Cultural Diversity.
