 A massive demonstration led by Ven. Karunalankar Mahathero, President, Peace Camping Group and Mr. Suhas Chakma, Director, Asian Indigenous and Tribal Peoples Network was held today in New Delhi to protest recent Bangladeshi military atrocities in CHT. Over 1000 Chakmas and non-Chakma human rights and peace activists participated in the demonstration.

DOES THAILAND have grand exit strategies in southern Thailand, where 4068 people have been killed (as of January 2009) since 2004? The answer is affirmative - but they would require serious and sustained policy implementations for any successful outcome within three years.

Eliminating ongoing grievances, expanding space for Malay cultural identity, improving quality of education and increasing employment, increasing local ownership and engaging community-based and civil society organisations as well as increasing diplomatic support, are key elements to end the violence and bring about the much needed national reconciliation in Narathiwat, Pattani and Yala.

White shirt peace group upset at lack of support

  A former leader of the "white-shirt" people for the end of political violence said the group was unlikely to come out on the streets, as it was fed up by the lack of popular support.  

 

The news comes despite fears of political violence linked to Thaksin Shinawatra's judgement day at the end of next week and two bomb incidents over the weekend.
