The Role of Religious Leaders in Conflict Transformation and Peacebuilding

An Encounter of Religions for Peace Inter-religious Councils of Thailand and Sri Lanka

Hotel Tawana Ramada Surawong Road.Bangkok, Thailand
 October 28-29, 2009

In times of war or peace and at different stages of conflict from prevention to post conflict reconciliation and reconstruction, religious leaders and their communities play a critical role.   Senior religious leaders representing Buddhist, Hindu, Muslim, Christian and other traditions from Sri Lanka and Thailand will be gathering in Bangkok on 29 October to present their unique initiatives of building an inter-religious instrument to undertake high-level advocacy and action to resolve conflict and advance peace.

The World Conference of Religions for Peace (WCRP/Religions for Peace), the world’slargest multi-religious organization accredited to the United Nations, has facilitated the building of mechanisms for multi-religious cooperation for peace called “Inter-religious Councils (IRC).”

The IRC led by senior representatives of religious communities serves as the multi-religious voice of the country, offers the possibility of mediation, rejects extremist tendencies, and educates the public on the positive, socially transformative power of religions and their cooperation.
